The X Factor of its day, Sensation '70 was the search for the stars of the decade ahead. Bands, singers, magicians, ventriloquists and racist comedians battled it out against the esteemed panel (George Martin, John Peel, Marianne Faithful and Ken Dodd). Controversy surrounded the show from the start though and a second series was not commissioned, despite its massive popularity, as the overall winners, rock group, Badfinger had already been signed to the Beatles Apple record label well before initial auditions took place. Even the upright and clean-nosed Martin was hounded by the gutter-press as he went shopping, resulting in his infamous "I'll tell you what sonny, I'll shove this bunch of bananas so far up your backside you can peel them with your teeth" rant.
