about

TO BE A PILGRIM (1980)
BBC2, 11.45pm. In Genesis 12:1-9, Abraham leaves his home in search of a land promised to him by God. In this series, prominent modern Christians describe a personal pilgrimage of their own. In the first episode, Harry Secombe CBE talks about his journey to the Guildford branch of B&Q to buy a new set of garden shears.
The incongruously ominous but undoubtedly religiously flavoured Hazlewood theme tune was one of the reasons Harry Secombe left after the first series to be replaced by Nerys Hughes of Liver Birds fame. Many cite this theme as evidence that Johnny was beginning to get dissillusioned with the commissions he received as his work took an increasingly electronic direction. The next decade would, however, see him at the forefront of pushing tv themes into the digital future and beyond.
